Ministry Day

On January 13th, 2016 we had a workshop about our education here at Liger to the head of the Ministry of Educations Youth and Sports. I had presented the big picture of Liger learning model. I think this workshop will change some part of the government’s education curriculum like making learning more interesting by having sometime to do some fun activities in class and also adding some more learning resources to the school.

Here are some pictures.

Drone Exploration

We proposed to Liger to buy us the DJI Phantom 3 for us to learn to film and creating our own drone business. We promised Liger that we will pay back the money that Liger invested on the drone. We have currently done two commercial films, one was for Camkid and the Solar Village and another one was for Arch Hub. Below is our drone commercial.

Changing Cambodia

To me changing Cambodia is not just physical changing. But it also about people opinion too. I think in education is one of the top problem in Cambodia. Most students in Cambodia just learn about the theory but not doing real experiments. Some people think that go to study is just a key to pass the test and get certificate for jobs in the future. If they study part time usually teacher with put the work the will go on the test that made it easier for them by just go to part time study and copy teacher’s works. One of the solution that I thought about was to have the ministry of education make the test not the teacher. When this happen teacher can’t give the questions to the students anymore that made student study harder. Teacher can still teach part time with the lesson about the previous lessons that help them more after formal class. Another problem is also about the trash and uncleaned water in Cambodia. My hypothesis is that if this problem is still not fixed in Cambodia the tourist might be decrease because of the beauty and the smell from the trash. One of the solution that I thought about is to do real punish to the people who break the law not just have the law for nothing. Another solution is also to have government’s own trash collector that have the job to collect all trash around the city. I shared my idea of education with my other 4 team mates to the people in Development Innovation and in the sharation in our school, Liger. Furthermore I also shared this idea in the Robotic Competition which take place in Singapore. In that competition I also part of showing Singapore that I am from Cambodia and Cambodian can do it too.

Algebra Description

Name of Course: Algebra A

Learning Facilitator: Jeff Boucher

Number of Students: 14

Dates: August 12 – January 16

Days we Meet: Monday – Tuesday

Course Description: In our Advanced Enrichment we learned about Math. This Advanced Enrichment lasted really long and the students had a really hard time working on that. We learned the hard math by learning it step by step. There are many clever students in this class and all of them are very patient. Every day in our class the math got harder and harder but we got smarter as the time kept going. Sometimes we realized that the math that we had learned could be used in real life. The important things that we learned for the whole year were negative numbers, the Greatest Common Factors, linear equations, y=mx+b form or Slope-interception, parabolas, Quadratic formula/equation, etc. All of these math sections were very hard. It is something that people will think that it is hard because they did not try yet and for those people who try they will think it is easy. But for us here we do not think it was hard or easy we were just trying our best.

Ecology 4 Description

Exploration Name: Cambodia Tropical Forest Ecology (Eco 4)

Date: August 13 – October 03

Number of student: 12

Essential Questions:

  1. How are organisms and the non-living environment interconnected in the world around us?
  2. What is the value of TROPICAL FOREST for Cambodia?
  3. How do humans IMPACT tropical ecosystems in Cambodia?
  4. How can we use our knowledge about ECOLOGY to help improve Cambodia?

Trips:

Kong Kong ( 1 week)

Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center  (1 day)

Description:

In Cambodia Tropical Forest Ecology we studied about the Ecosystems in Cambodia and all around the world. We also learned about the many Ecological Relationships in  ecosystems.

In this exploration we want to change Cambodia by giving Cambodian people the knowledge about the forest and the animals in Cambodia from our experience. We also want to protect the animals in Cambodia from the hunter also to help save the endangered animals.

Our exploration took a trip to Koh Kong to learn more about forest in Koh Kong. When we were there we went into the forest and we slept at the campsite. On our trip we walked in the forest, swam at the waterfall and slept in the forest. We also went to Mangrove forest and then we came back to Liger. We also took a trip to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center to learn about the siamese crocodile and the moon bear and sun bear. At there we met a lot of people from Free The Bears and Flora Fauna International and they taught us about the animals in the zoo.

In the classroom we learned a lot of things and we worked on projects in small groups.   Our projects were about Ecological Relationships, different biomes around the world, Food Web in Koh Kong, Makey Makey Project, and Science Museum Blog. Our highlights are to understand how important the plants and animal are. Also to know about different organizations that help the animals and to understand clearly about their goal and how can they help Cambodia.

ASEAN Politics Description

Name of Course: Asian Politics

Learning Facilitator: Kimchhel

Number of Students: 9

Dates: March 30 – June 12

In our class we studied about the countries that joined ASEAN. First teacher wrote the names of the countries on pieces of paper. Then each student did the lucky draw to pick the country that they needed to research. When we got enough information we created the presentation on Prezi, Google Presentation or One Note. After three weeks of doing the research we started to present about the country that we did research about. We talked about the flag, land and population, religion, GDP and some other things. We did some comparisons between some countries to Cambodia. For example in 2003 Cambodia is having more trade freedom than Thailand but in 2014 Thailand is having more trade freedom than Cambodia. Another example is in 2005 Laos having more trade freedom than Cambodia but in 2014 Cambodia is having more trade freedom than Cambodia.  After everyone did their presentation the teacher introduced more about ASEAN politics. The categories that he taught us were political systems (ex. communism and democracy), the start of ASEAN (why ASEAN started), the history of ASEAN countries(revolution from some powerful countries) and so on. ASEAN started because two reasons. One is because to prevent from war (island conflict) and another reason because to block communist influence (Cold War). In about 19th century France there was a revolution to Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and more but not Thailand because they talked with England that Thailand is the border of the country that they do the revolution on. Moreover teacher also taught us that ASEAN divided into two parts. One is Indochina (Thailand, Burma) and another one is Malaysia (island country).

Scratch Description

Name of Course: Scratch

Learning Facilitator: Max

Number of Students: 13

Advanced Enrichment Dates: August 12-Oct 17

Days we Meet: Thursday and Friday

Course Description: In our Advanced Enrichment class we learned how to program in Scratch. Scratch is a program for making continuous animation, games, simulation, music and art. This program uses custom programming language. We learned each category of custom programming language: Motion, Control, Looks, Sensing, Sounds and Pen. Motion is moving custom program. Control is controlling custom program, for example when we click right arrow the avatar go to right. Looks is size, avatar, and communicating custom program. Sensing is sensor custom program, for example when we touch color black the avatar turn to black. Sounds is sounds custom program, for example when we press space avatar say hello. Pen is coloring custom program. We learned what the categories mean and we translated in Khmer to make more understand and remember. We played with the program to change the color to make it big. We thought what story we were going to make. Then we made the stories in Scratch. Also some of us made the games. When we had some of questions we asked teacher or our friends to help. We played with makey makey that connects to Scratch. One example of a game we made is when we touch the Earth material that connects to makey makey and the makey makey connects to computer. The computer plays the sounds.
